One quick observation is that out of eight house presidents currently only one is a women (and that one comes from Strong House). That over the last three years of the 26 house presidents only 6 have been female (and again three of those are built into the system because of Strong). --Mary Catherine Halfpenny 09 (Strong House President 08-09)
I see women engaging more in roles that have an administrative/support/behind the scenes role. I also see the women students I work with having a difficult time articulating how their leadership styles differ from their male counterparts -- and feeling that those styles are valid.
At least inside the houses women are the Student Fellows and the House Student Advisers. It's great that they are in these positions, but it's also unfortunate that the positions have come to be viewed as "maternal" and a "woman's position" as opposed to just being another position in the dorm. I agree with MC that there needs to be more women in positions of power on campus, especially in the role of House President.

Welcome to the Women & Leadership at Vassar blog. This blog is a project started by Strong House in attempt to create dialogue about the ways in which women engage in leadership roles on campus.
In the last three years...
0 of 3 VSA Presidents have been women.
8 of 14 VSA Exec members have been women.
6 of 26 House Presidents have been women (and 3 of them had to be women from Strong)!
2 of 12 Class Presidents have been women.
Did you know?
Since 2002-03, only 21 of 62 house presidents have been women
Of the last 10 VSA Presidents, 4 were women, 6 were men. Most recently, there are have been five consecutive male VSA presidents.
Of 53 VSA Exec Board members, 25 were women, 28 were men.
